Where would caricaturists be without politicians? Whilst the occasional Kennedy or Obama is blessed with a fairly normal array of facial features, for the most part Nixon, Eisenhower and LBJ set the tone somewhere between ‘bulldog’ and ‘horrific fire at Madame Tussauds’. As a president, Trump very much hewed close to the majority of his predecessors in this (if only this) regard. In the dubious honour of the recently passed election, we have collected a series of illustrations from the pen of cartoonist Martin Rowson of some of the more visually distracting Commanders in Chief from the recent book Gimson’s Presidents: Brief Lives from Washington to Trump that he collaborated on with journalist Andrew Gimson. Whilst many would like to view the 45th president as a horrific aberration, going by these images he might fit in more than we would like to admit.
Hail to the Chief?! Brief Lives of America’s Best and Worst Presidents is on exhibit at the Cartoon Museum until December 31st (lockdown dependent).
