Isolated but not alone

The advantages of living in a retirement village are becoming increasingly understood, as more people choose the lifestyle of retaining independence whilst having the security of knowing that help is at hand if needed. The recent outbreak of Covid-19 and ‘lockdown’ has really brought these benefits to the fore. Cinnamon Care Collection’s Susie Oakley, whose mother Jenny is a resident in a retirement village in Gloucestershire, shares her experience of the benefits of a retirement complex such as the new Cinnamon retirement village, Eden Court in Battersea.

“As soon as it was announced that people over the age of 70 needed to stay at home, I was worried for my 81-year old mother. She is very independent and, until recently, had a busy and social lifestyle, visiting the local coffee shop, popping to the shops, playing bridge, and seeing friends and family frequently. However, with her living in a retirement village, I knew she would be looked after and things like food shopping and meals would be taken care of if needed.”

Her mother explains “I was worried about having to buy food during lockdown and cook more for myself. This has all been sorted and I can now have a main meal delivered to my door by the lovely hospitality staff and they can also provide basic foods such as bread, milk, fruit, cereals and things like that. The Activities Coordinator also helped me set up Skype on my tablet so that I can keep in touch with family and friends – she was very patient as I’m not very good with technology! The staff have suggested lots of things I can do at home; they keep in touch with me by phone to make sure I am OK and send regular update newsletters. They have also arranged for my newspaper to be delivered daily, and post is collected twice a week. They are also still collecting prescriptions from the local chemist, so I really don’t have to worry about anything. I don’t know what I would have done without all the wonderful staff.”

Susie added “I know from first hand experience that retirement villages such as our forthcoming Eden Court not only provide a wonderful and safe community for the people living there, but also provide reassurance and peace of mind for family members, especially in these worrying times.”

Eden Court retirement village, located on Battersea Park Road in the heart of London, is due to open soon with 28 apartments, an array of top-quality facilities and a luxurious care home. Apartment prices range from £400,000 to £730,000. For further information visit or call 020 3627 1849.
