Academic Summer Camps: A smart blend of study and fun

Are you a busy London parent, wondering how to occupy your teen during the summer? Do you wish there was a painless way to help them get a head start for GSCEs or A Levels that are looming? Do you love the holidays but want to find more productive ways for kids to spend their time than glued to a screen? If so, summer camp specialists Academic Summer could be the answer. With campuses in London, Cambridge, Bristol and Manchester, they offer a carefully tailored blend of learning and fun for UK and international students aged 7-18. Both international and UK students get the opportunity to stay on campus; enjoying the comfortable single bedrooms, equipped with their own ensuite, or commute from home if they live locally. The children spend the brushing up on Maths, Chemistry and Physics in the fully equipped labs, followed by a visit to the Harry Potter studios, learning to punt in Cambridge or climbing up the 02 in the afternoon. Accompanied by like-minded students from all over the world, your child will find a diverse group of friends. In the evenings, residential students are free to take part in lectures, talent shows, discos, or opt for a drumming and percussion lesson.

There are over 25 subjects on offer including all the core GCSE/A level/IB curriculum subjects as well as additional value-added topics such as essay writing and presentation skills. Class sizes are limited to 15 and our fully qualified teachers provide lectures, assemblies and one-on-one tutor time. Laboratories are available for scientists and workshops are available for design and technology projects.

Specialist programmes preparing students for Oxbridge and entry to medical school are on offer, while individual requirements, such as a specific focus on literacy or maths, can also be catered for. For those students wishing to consider a career in sports their one week Academic Sports course in Bristol combines practical sports including specialist coaching in tennis or swimming (including life-saving) with theory including Sports Psychology, Anatomy and Nutrition.

Their Academic Junior course, which offers day time study for juniors aged 7-12 places a similar emphasis on the balance between learning and fun. This is perfect for parents wanting to prepare their kids for the Eleven Plus or Common Entrance exams, or just offer them extra support.

New for this year, Academic Summer is also offering a course aimed at getting students aged 18+ ready for university. Based in the vibrant, student-friendly university city of Manchester, the Academic Adults course covers basic skills such as notetaking, critical thinking, research and essay writing across four areas: Liberal Arts, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Business. The course also has a fantastic cultural and fun leisure programme aimed at helping students prepare socially and practically. They run workshops that teach cooking and how to live on a budget as well as team-building trips includng sailing in the Lake District and trekking in North Wales.

Under its new Academic Camp Canada brand, Academic Summer has two new locations Vancouver Island or New Brunswick, for students aged 11-17, wanting to go abroad. Set in stunning surroundings, students can prepare for the IB Diploma, Advanced Placement (AP) options, or future university study alongside other young people from Canada and all over the world.

Course director Helen Lami, believes the key to Academic Summers popularity with parents and students, is that the camp leaders ensure every aspect of the experience is fun. She says “We understand that doing lessons in the summer is a big ask, so we go all out to make them immersive and engaging in beautiful, comfortable surroundings. Once lessons are done, we set off on one of our truly fun days out which could include a trip to Lords Cricket Ground or shopping in the Lanes in Brighton. For students at our Academic Camp Canada the fun extends to whale watching, a session on bush-craft skills and trips to the beautiful cities of Victoria or Vancouver.”
