Match Report: Chelsea v Hull

Chelsea cruised through the FA Cup quarter-finals on Friday evening after a 4-0 thrashing against Championship strugglers Hull City at Stamford Bridge.

Brazilian superstar Willian scored twice in a first-half blitz from Antonio Conte’s blues, opening the scoring after just 106 seconds with a calm finish.

Pedro doubled his side’s advantage after he was sent through on goal by Cesc Fabergas, before the Tigers’ defensive meltdown was completed as Willian took advantage of a loose ball to slot it past David Marshall into the net.

It was then the turn of two new signings to link up as Oliver Giroud scored his first Chelsea goal when he met Emerson Palmieri’s cross perfectly at the near post to flick the ball into the net for a fourth.

Nigel Adkins’ side missed a second-half penalty as Willy Caballero denied Republic of Ireland international David Meyler following a loose Fabregas challenge on Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson.

Conte decided again to rest regular starters such as Eden Hazard,N’Golo Kante and Cesar Azpilicueta-although he still named a strong team who had far too much quality for the side from Humberside.

Hull were much better in the second half, giving Caballero much more to do as he made three good saves Jackson Irvine, Nouha Dicko and Jon Toral.

Chelsea however were dominant and could have had more as Giroud shot over from Pedro’s scooped pass, before Willian and Pedro forced two good saves out of Scottish keeper Marshall.

Conte told the media after the game that “it was a positive night, Oliver Giroud got his first goal and Willian had an impressive performance.”

“For sure when I go home, I have many good doubts because I have to try to make the best decision for Tuesday and to have many options is good for me and good for the team”.

Hull boss Adkins said after the game “They were very good in the first half. We gifted them some positions, but we knew it was going to be a tough ask. We were not close enough in the first, but the second half was a totally different story.

“We could have taken the foot off the gas, but we were a lot more assertive, the players responded in a positive manner and we have 15 cup finals now. It was a good character.”
