The Kensington & Chelsea Foundation’s second Summer Sparks campaign has kicked off and the Foundation is encouraging local people and businesses to join them to make a real difference to local young people this summer.
The Kensington & Chelsea Foundation believes that charity begins at home and this is particularly important in a Borough that is so full of sharp disparities in wealth and opportunity. For many young people in Kensington & Chelsea, the summer holidays is a time for adventure, exotic travel and opportunity. But that’s not the
case for everyone. The summer holidays can also be a very challenging time and there are many young people locally for whom local youth groups and youth charities are a godsend.
The Foundation is working with eight local charities to extend the activities they provide for young people over the summer holiday period. These include Baraka, ClementJames Centre, Hornimans Adventure Playground, Pimento Community Projects, Rugby Portobello Trust, Solidarity Sports, Venture Community and Westway Learning.
The Foundation started Summer Sparks last year and over 500 young people benefitted from the additional resources we were able to raise. As a result of Summer Sparks, local charities were able to employ additional play workers, stay open for longer, take groups who’ve rarely London to the Isle of Wight and run workshops from dance to carnival arts.
As Colin Salmon, the actor and Summer Sparks Ambassador, says; “We only get one change at childhood and we want to make sure all our young people get the chance to be inspired, have fund and try new exciting activities over the summer holidays.”
The Foundation is encouraging support from all quarters, and this already includes The Nadler Hotel and KX Gym. KX Gym will also be sending their personal trainers to lead sessions for young people participating in Solidarity Sports’ programme. Some of the area’s best residents have built a £1 donation into a special dish and these can be found at Snaps + Rye on Golborne Road, The Shed in Notting Hill Gate and Il Portico on High Street Kensington.
